Canada Port Strike Update
Posted 11/12/2024
Our Canadian office has notified us that the Canadian Labour Minister, Steven MacKinnon, announced this morning that the Government will intervene to end the work stoppages at ports in British Columbia and Quebec. MacKinnon will be appointing the Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to order resumption of all operations and move the talks to binding arbitration.
The operations statuses of the Canadian Ports are detailed below:
- Montreal: Closed due to lockout/ strike
- Halifax: Open and accepting Montreal cargo on case by case basis. Congestion is building though. For urgent or time sensitive cargo we strongly recommend looking to transloading option at the port.
- Saint John, NB: Open but it has been reported they are rejected handling some Montreal cargo due to workers standing with the Montreal union workers.
- Vancouver & Prince Rupert: Closed due to lockout/ strike.
We will provide updates once details are released on when the port operations will resume.
