Canada Rail Strike Averted

Posted 08/26/2024

A planned strike by CN Teamsters union members has ended after the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) imposed binding arbitration.

On Friday, August 23rd, the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) served a strike notice for 10am on August 26th for union workers at Canadian National (CN). The action followed a lockout by CN and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) on August 22nd that lasted 18 hours. The Canadian government intervened on August 24th with a directive to the CIRB to settle the dispute between employers and unions through binding arbitration.

Both railways have said they will lawfully comply with the order and are focused on restoring service. They intend to appeal the decision in federal court.
