CBP's Public Awareness Campaign on Fraudulent Consumer Goods

Posted 12/02/2021

WSSA's partnership with CBP has provided us with many unique opportunities as we work together to find solutions to processes during these unprecedented times. We continue to join forces on the ongoing project of streamlining the CBMA claims process by holding collaborative discussions and providing feedback from the industry on system integration. This has been a very impactful role for us, and we are grateful for the opportunity to be able to represent our members' needs and desires regarding the future of CBMA.

Likewise, through our collaboration, CBP has  requested our assistance in spreading their holiday season public awareness campaign on how to identify and avoid fraudulent products and consumer goods:

The holiday shopping season is underway, and you’re invited to play an active role in an exciting public awareness campaign the National Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Center has launched to actively promote health and safety during the holidays, especially while shopping.

The IPR Center’s ‘2021 Holiday Shopping Guide’ campaign features an online toolkit to help consumers protect themselves from substandard or even hazardous counterfeit items sold online and in stores. Developed by Customs and Border Protection, Homeland Security Investigations, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and The Toy Association, the toolkit offers important tips for avoiding fraudulent products and consumer goods. It also emphasizes the dangers of purchasing counterfeit goods such as electronics that can overheat and explode; bicycle helmets that can break upon impact; phony cosmetics and healthcare products made with dangerous or unsanitary ingredients; and seasonal items for the home, like holiday lights that can cause fires.

Supporting each other in this campaign and working together will help us ensure you and your families remain safe this holiday season and year around.  For more information, you can visit the National IPR Center’s campaign videos on its YouTube page, or follow the IPR Center on Twitter at @IPRCenter.

Thank you, and season's greetings from all of us at WSSA and CBP.
