Congestion Continues: Hot Spots
Germany: Rail strikes in Germany this past week have impacted freight and passenger travel, causing delays. Unfortunately, the strike that was supposed to conclude today has been extended through August 25th. We are working with our office in Germany to mitigate potential delays caused by this strike, but, nevertheless, please plan accordingly if you have cargo moving via the German rail system.
Chile: The situation at the Port of San Antonio in Chile is creating backlog and delays for outgoing cargo. Inclement weather at the port has forced vessels to cancel sailings, roll cargo, and some vessels are not able to call the port due to the high winds and heavy seas. Some carriers have stopped bookings through the first weeks of September. Furthermore, due to the bad weather in the mountains, the pass connecting Chile and Argentina that reported closed earlier this week will remain closed through the weekend.
If you have cargo departing from Chile, please plan for longer lead time and potential increased costs due to this situation. We are working with our contacts on the ground to mitigate delays as much as possible, and as always, we will keep you informed of any updates.
USA: Last Friday it was reported that the number of vessels waiting outside of LA/LB broke a new record. 125 ships were waiting outside the port, and being only the beginning of peak season, the congestion could worsen from here. The West Coast is not the only area experiencing congestion and delays. In Chicago, over 22 miles of rail cars are backed up waiting to be moved. And on the East Coast, over 17 vessels are gathering outside of Savannah waiting to access the port. Labor availability, summer vacations, and COVID cases amongst employees are all impacting yard turn times and productivity. Please plan for extra lead time in your supply chain and increased costs as these congested areas are worked through.
