Ports Prepare for Hurricane Matthew

East Coast Port Updates

As Hurricane Matthew barrels toward the U.S. East Coast, states of emergency have been declared in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. By this afternoon, the state of Florida is expected to have 500 members of the Florida National Guard activated and another 6,000 ready to be deployed as needed. Miami, Jacksonville, and Port Everglades have declared condition YANKEE, requiring all commercial vessels to leave port, while Charleston has altered its operating schedule for the coming days. Specific port notices can be seen below.

Weather Advisory:

#HurricaneMatthew USCG anticipates implementing Port Readiness Condition YANKEE effective Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 4:00 AM. Cargo terminals SFCT and POMTOC will be closed Oct. 5 for ALL VESSEL AND TRUCK TRAFFIC until further notice. We encourage cruise passengers to contact the lines directly for the most up-to-date itinerary changes.

Jacksonville Port

Effective 6pm today, the US Coast Guard Captain of the Port has established Port Hurricane condition YANKEE for the Port of Jacksonville.

Port Everglades

Broward County's Port Everglades is currently operating under the U.S. Coast Guard's (USCG) Port Condition YANKEE, which is a 24-hour alert in anticipation of gale force winds. All landside operations are currently open and operating at this time. Condition YANKEE requires all commercial vessels to leave the port. However, landside operations, such as truck traffic and petroleum operations, will continue as long as it is determined to be safe.  Cruise passengers are encouraged to call their cruise lines for updated schedules and/or itinerary changes.

Port of Charleston

In preparation for Hurricane Matthew, the South Carolina Ports Authority is altering its operating schedule to assist customers with delivery of cargo on terminals, while also limiting exposure of cargo on terminals to any damage. This update replaces previous versions.

Wednesday, October 5:

We will not receive any EXPORT refrigerated cargo loads.
We will continue to deliver IMPORT refrigerated cargo and empty reefers during normal hours.
After 12 PM, we will no longer accept or deliver EMPTY containers.
After 12 PM, we will no longer accept hazardous cargo.
We will continue to process IMPORT and EXPORT missions until 6 PM.

Thursday, October 6 – Saturday, October 8:

Gates will be CLOSED and no containers will be interchanged.
Monday, October 10 – planned return to normal hours.

Port of Savannah
