Strike Action Follow-Up: Germany & CA
To follow up on our Wednesday report, strike action continues in Germany and California, creating congestion and increasing costs for shippers trying to move their cargo.
Germany: As we reported on Wednesday, strike action continues in Germany after the latest round of negotiations between trade union ver.di and the Central Association of German Seaport Companies (ZDS) failed to reach a successful conclusion. The strike has been ongoing since yesterday and is scheduled to continue until 6:00am on Saturday, July 16, 2022. This stoppage is directly affecting operations in Bremerhaven, Hamburg and Wilhemshaven, so please continue to plan for congestion and delays in this area.
California: Truckers at the Port of Oakland have announced an official strike for Monday-Wednesday next week in protest of AB-5. Protest action is also taking place at LA/LB. At both ports, truck traffic entering and exiting the port has slowed to a crawl and created massive congestion. Truckers are warning customers that they may face demurrage charges, per diem and delayed pickups due to this activity. We will keep you informed of these developments.
Chile: The pass connecting Argentina and Chile has been under severe weather this past week and is still closed to truck traffic. Snowfall is expected to come to a close over the weekend, with the hope that the pass can be opened Monday. However, with over 2200 trucks waiting to cross at this point, progress will be slow. Please plan for additional delays for your cargo coming out of this region.
