Winter Weather & Port Congestion Update

Posted 02/01/2021

The winter storm that arrived Sunday night is expected to bring up to two feet of snow and blizzard-like conditions over much of the East Coast. Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York woke up to multiple inches of snow accumulation for the start of the work week, and the snow is expected to continue heavily as the storm travels further up the coast into Maine.

With the blizzard conditions, travel will be difficult and is not advised. NYC’s Mayor de Blasio has issued a state of emergency and restricted non-essential road travel in the city until 6am Tuesday. Ports are also following suit and ceasing vessel and truck operations. Below, please find a summary of East Coast port closures:

NY/NJ – Due to inclement weather expected to impact the region, all NJMT container terminals and depots will be closed, Monday 2/1; the NJMT truck service center will also be closed 2/1.

Philadelphia – Due to the impending winter storm expected, the following Philaport terminals will be closed 2/1:  Avenue Marine Terminal, Tioga Marine Terminal, Piers 80 & 82, Pier 84 and Warehouses 74 & 78A.

Baltimore – Due to the impending winter storm, Dundalk Marine Terminal and Seagirt Marine Terminal will be closed, Monday, 2/1.

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary. The storm closures will exacerbate already congested conditions, especially in the port of NY/NJ. We have seen considerable delays moving cargo from ship to rail, as well as shortages of truck power to move cargo out of port terminals. Please plan accordingly and let us know if you have any specific questions on delay or congestion.
