Strike at Port Montreal

Longshoreman at the port of Montreal, Canada’s second-largest port, voted almost unanimously yesterday for a strike mandate to be used at any point during the union’s current contract negotiation period.

The contract, which expired in December, is currently being negotiated between the union and the Maritime Employers Association. Negotiation topics include what workers consider “oppressive” working conditions, along with salaries and schedules that require longshoremen to work 19 days out of every 21. If these conditions are not altered, longshoremen say a strike may be necessary.

Though not yet confirmed, if a strike does take place, it could cause  transportation delays for a significant period of time.
