MSC Rate Increases

Posted 12/16/2020

Mediterranean Shipping Corporation (MSC), the second largest global steamship line, has recently implemented changes in rates and added equipment imbalance surcharges.

DTHC:

MSC announced an increase in the Destination Terminal Handling Charge (DTHC) for the USA in the amount of $50.00 per 20’ container/$100 per 40’ container effective January 1, 2021. They have provided announcements for DTHC increases in other global ports as well, and please let us know if you would like to see any specific area.

Fee for paying via check:

For those of you who pay MSC directly on any shipments, MSC is implementing an administration fee of $50.00 for using payment via check as of January 1, 2021. ACH payments are encouraged and will be exempt from the fee.

Equipment Imbalance Surcharge (EBS):

MSC has announced an imbalance surcharge of $50.00/teu from Italy and $75.00/container from Spain, effective on December 9. Earlier, on November 16, this surcharge was also implemented for cargo departing from these two counties to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. Some other carriers are also implementing equipment imbalance surcharges, so MSC is not alone, but the charges are not universal in scope or size.

CUC/Chassis Usage Charge:

The MSC chassis usage charge is remaining at $80.00 but they are implementing a time limit and adding additional fees. For dry containers, the first four days will be included at the $80 fee. After four days, the fee is $18 per day. For Refrigerated containers, the time limit is three days, with $18.00 per day after three.

As we have reported, congestion is a problem in many areas, ships are overbooked, and we expect a challenging year ahead. We will continue to contract with all global carriers and arrange monthly and quarterly reviews of service, rates, and routes. This will remain an essential part of the WSSA services, and we remain available to discuss any specific questions you may have on the current global shipping market.
