Congestion Mounts at European Ports

Congestion pain points are popping up across the globe, most recently in Europe with issues in France and Italy. Please take note of the following congestion updates that may impact shipping out of these regions in the coming days and weeks:

France

The French Union FNPD CGT representing port and dock workers previously called for a schedule of strikes in May and June after unsatisfactory meeting outcomes with the Ministry of Transport earlier this month. The four hour upcoming strikes scheduled for May 31st, June 4th, 6th, 10th, 12th, 14th, 18th, 20th, 24th, 26th and 28th will also be joined by weekly 24 hour strike days, which will increase difficulties in daily logistics activities around port operations. Our colleagues are doing their best to minimize delays as much as possible, but please plan for additional time if you have cargo coming from this region. 

Italy

Due to existing conflicts between truckers and the port of Genova, congestion has been mounting for incoming cargo. As a result of the congestion, inbound truckers are planning to institute a congestion fee that can range from Euro 120-180. The implementation date for the new congestion fee is planned for next Monday, 6/3/24. Unfortunately, until this situation is resolved, please plan for this additional charge if you have cargo being routed through Genova port. 

Belgium/The Netherlands

Congestion is also present in Rotterdam and Antwerp ports with wait times lasting upwards of 32 hours and even 96 hours for barges and feeder vessels in Rotterdam. If you have cargo departing these areas, please plan for potential delays as delivery times are unable to be guaranteed.
