The pass connecting Mendoza, Argentina, and Santiago, Chile, is scheduled to re-open today at 10am. Cargo will once again be able to move unimpeded through the region.

Yesterday we received word that the pass between Mendoza, Argentina, and Santiago, Chile, was closed due to inclement weather conditions in the mountains.

As of today, the pass is still closed and will remain so for the rest of the day.

Many factors affect transit times. Below please find an update on current issues that may affect the movement of your cargo:

�Severe weather conditions hit the Chilean central zone in mid-August with massive waves and high winds forcing port closures in San Antonio and Valparaiso. Vessels scheduled to call on the ports during this time frame had to omit the port call and depart without loading cargo. The result has been a backlog of cargo, and we have received reports of some short shipments and delays.

Chilean truckers are striking today, blocking entrances to important roadways and accesspoints to ports. For this reason, some shipments could experience slight delays if moving in or out of the ports. Fortunately, operations should normalize by tomorrow morning, with the conclusion of the strike.

Port of Oakland terminals have proposed their own version of PierPass which they will call “OakPass.” However, when asked by the Federal Maritime Commission if the operations schedule of this “OakPass” will be shared with shippers, terminals responded no, an answer that did not sit well with Commissioners or shippers.
