East Coast Congestion and West Coast Progress

Due to increased cargo surges, diverted container traffic from West Coast ports, and recent inclement weather, the East Coast is experiencing a sizeable backlog of shipments. The Port of New York and New Jersey is most affected, but the Port of Norfolk is also experiencing some delays and backlog. The increase in volume has led to more congestion and extended waiting periods for truckers. While the East Coast experiences congestion, the West Coast is slowly coming back to normal. Although a full recovery cannot be expected until mid-May, progress is being made especially at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, which are both experiencing gradual improvements. The Port of Oakland, unfortunately, is still experiencing some ILWU resistance to the contract agreement which has resulted in the unpredictable shut down of terminals and the instability of truck lines at the port.
